NHIFP Board Officers
President: Rev. Dr. Louise Goben
Teacher, Pierce College
Louise has been a volunteer with the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry almost since it's inception. She and her family worked for decades transporting sacks of food from Temple Beth Hillel to distribution at First Christian Church. An ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Louise is retired from active congregational work, but preaches and teaches Bible when she is invited. In addition to her work with the NHIFP, Louise teaches courses in World Religion and History of Religion with the Encore Program at Los Angeles Pierce College.
Secretary: Barbara Javitz
Barbara Javitz, Board Secretary is a former Director of the Food Pantry, and has volunteered for over eight years in various capacities, aiding the expansion of the food pantry.
Prior to NHIFP, she was a SOVA volunteer for over ten years.
Recently retired after a long career in film distribution, she currently manages volunteers, community engagement and food drives for NHIFP.
Treasurer: Andrew Kuo
Andrew is a Principal for a private equity investment firm headquartered in Beverly Hills, CA. His current responsibilities include corporate financial consolidations, audit, treasury, corporate accounting system maintenance, investment management and general financial reporting. Mr. Kuo has worked in accounting and finance since 1995.
Mr. Kuo became a CPA while working in the audit group of Deloitte & Touche, LLP in Los Angeles.
Mr. Kuo holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles. In his spare time, he has coached youth and club soccer in Sherman Oaks for the last 12 years and has also been an active member of his local catholic church.

Marty Lasker
Marty Lasker is a long-time resident of Valley Village and received his education from an array of local schools starting with Monlux Elementary through to UCLA and USC. His professional career started as a hospital administrator and moved into corporate training with an international list of clients. He spends most of his time as a volunteer with Executive Service Corps. and traveling while still leaving a bit of time for theater, reading and gardening.
Rabbi Sarah Hronsky
Senior Rabbi, Temple Beth Hillel Rabbi Sarah is proud to be clergy for this sacred community for over 20 years, and has worked in partnership with the NHIFP across these many years; happy to serve on its Board since it received its separate non-profit status. She is also a proud Fellow of the elite Rabbinic Leadership Initiative of the Shalom Hartman Institute of Jerusalem, and currently President of both the L.A. Jewish Federation’s Board of Rabbis and the L.A. Council of Religious Leaders--an Interfaith Clergy group. Rabbi is also the recipient of the 2023 Pioneer Women Award from the City of L.A., which recognizes individuals who’ve dedicated a significant part of their lives to promote gender equality, advancing the status of women and girls in L.A. In 2023 the award in particular recognized women who advance and uplift the unhoused.
Reverend Ian Macdonald
Sr. Minister of Anamesa, a home/internet church hybrid through the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. He earned his Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from California State University, Fullerton. Since 2010, he has served churches in Michigan and California. Prior to answering his call to ministry, Rev. Ian was an award-winning Creative Director for numerous national and international advertising agencies. And oversees the blog JesusnotJesus.org
Sandra McCurdy: Creative Director
Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Silked, boasts over two decades of experience in fashion, arts, and entertainment. Originating from Jamaica and raised in Toronto, Sandra’s journey began as a model and actress, later transitioning to roles behind the camera as a photographer, producer, and director. Her expertise culminated in Silked, where she curates a unique visual identity for the beauty brand. Beyond her professional successes, Sandra is deeply committed to philanthropy. Inspired by the impactful work of NHIFP, she became involved as a volunteer in 2021. Recognizing the organization’s positive influence on the community, she eagerly joined the board, focusing her efforts on the communications committee and spearheading social media initiatives.
Babette Wilk
Babette joined the Food Pantry Board in January 2023 where she is a member of the Communications Committee and Co-chaired the NHIFP 40th Anniversary Celebration.
In 2009, she co-founded a Funding Circle of friends and colleagues who have pledged on-going monthly support for purchases of non-perishable food to donate - this commitment continues to the present-day.
As a Committee Member of the LA Valley College Helping Hands Project, she mentors students, assists ESL students with conversational skills, and supports an on-campus food pantry for food insecure students.
Caryn Panec - Adjunct Professor
Caryn has been a volunteer with the North Hollywood Interfaith Food pantry for several years at Temple Beth Hillel’s packing facility. She has been a longtime Studio City resident with her husband, Tim, and volunteered in local schools and scouting, while raising their two children in the community.
As an Adjunct Professor at Glendale Community College, she serves families in Parent Education and teaches English and History to adults working toward their GED, high school diploma, and college preparation. In addition to working and volunteering, she enjoys trail running, reading and cooking.
Kevin Crowell
Kevin has been volunteering at the food pantry since early 2023, primarily in distribution. This has been a life changing experience! The camaraderie of the volunteers and the joy seen by those receiving food is so rewarding. In his professional life, Kevin assists seniors and their families plan for end of life care. He earned a Masters in Gerontology from USC and has worked with the senior population for over 25 years. For recreation, he enjoys golf, racquetball, hiking, music and watching stupid movies.
Reverend Jefferson Beeker
Director, Meditation Ministry, Harmony Toluca Lake
Prior to going into the ministry Jefferson worked in the entertainment industry in Washington, D.C., New York and L.A. He received his Master’s of Divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 2012 and currently is the Director of Meditation Ministries for the Harmony Toluca Lake Church, where he also hosts the meditation podcast, Inner Harmony. Since 2008 he has officiated hundreds of funerals and memorial services for Forest Lawn Memorial Parks in Glendale and Hollywood Hills.
Uri Niv - Attorney
Uri H. Niv is a trial lawyer helping the victims and survivors of elder abuse and their families. Before joining Arias Sanguinetti Wang & Team, Uri was a litigator at one of the world’s largest law firms, where he represented healthcare companies, Fortune 500 corporations, and high net-worth individuals. This experience helps Uri get his clients the answers and compensation they deserve. Uri has recovered millions of dollars for his clients and supported them through the difficult process of pursuing justice with legal action.
Uri fights for victims outside the firm as well. Uri volunteered as a prosecutor with the District Attorney of Los Angeles, where he prosecuted multiple violent felonies. He also dedicates his time trying to end homelessness in Los Angeles. Uri sits on the board of the Inner City Law Center, a legal services organization which protects vulnerable tenants from slumlords and illegal evictions. In 2024, the Center honored Uri with their Humanitarian of the Year award for his work in keeping a mother and her young children housed during COVID. Uri also sits on the boards of the UCLA Law Alumni Association and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, where he coordinates food drives, hygiene kit builds, and other relief work for those in need.
Outside the office, Uri spends his time with his family, rooting for the UCLA Bruins (where Uri received his undergraduate and law degrees) and his beloved Buffalo Bills.
Drew Powell - Actor
After graduating with honors from Depauw University, Indiana native Drew Powell drove west to pursue his dream of being a professional actor. Outside of his part-time stint as the Youth Director of First Christian Church North Hollywood, Drew never had another job outside of acting (you can find out more at DrewPowell.com).
Coming from a family of ministers (current count is more than 14!) in the Disciples of Christ and Presbyterian denominations, Drew always felt the call to give back to his community. It’s been his great honor to serve as a board member, and as a volunteer for the NHIFP which brings so many together to help so many more!

Murray Pollard
Murray is a retired financial executive with extensive cross functional experience in commercial and consumer finance, operational management, policy development and implementation, plus corporate governance. He worked for Xerox, Deutsche Bank and GE Capital holding positions such as National Customer Retention Manager (Canada) and Vice-President. In addition he was on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Hearing Society for five years and was a Co-Chair and seminar speaker for The Canadian Institute and Federated press. He is also a seven year volunteer on a Restorative Justice panel through the LA City Attorney’s Office. The work there is to determine the issues that lead up to a crime being committed and help the perpetrator resolve the issues such as poverty, mental illness, lack of job skills, unemployment, etc., This is a program for first time offenders; the goal is to help them, in a non judgmental fashion. This is not a program of punishment. The percent of people who reoffend that have gone through this program is less than 2%. Murray hold both Canadian and US citizenship. Murray feels it is important to give back to society and help those in need in a non-judgmental, positive fashion. Life has its ups and downs, it is important to help people through the difficult times.

Philip Lester: Director
Philip began working for the pantry shortly after the COVID pandemic began, applying for a part-time job to drive their vehicles. 15 months later, he was promoted to Director. Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, he has also lived in Ohio, Korea, Florida, and northern Virginia. Philip attended the University of Maryland, Munich Campus, and graduated from Florida State University in Theatre. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, and has done theatre, television, film, and commercials since then. Additionally, he is a playwright and director. His play “Murder: Stage Right” has been produced in more than 25 venues across 12 states and 3 foreign countries. He currently lives in Valley Village with his wife, Jenny, and enjoys travel, golf and karaoke.

NHIFP 25th Anniversary Celebration Founder's Speech
The history of the food pantry is truly an amazing story with a cast of thousands. It’s a story about statistics and numbers; about hopelessness and despair; about sacrifice, hard work and commitment; about redemption and miracles. But above all, I think, it’s a story about how God moves among, and, interacts with His people. It’s about the sower who went to sow some seed, and as He sowed, some seed fell on good soil…
In 1981, two old friends, Marj Luke and Florence Adler, sat talking one day. Both women, nearing retirement years, wanted to do something with their time that would make a difference. As they talked they said to themselves, what North Hollywood needed was a sense of community, and in particular, an interfaith community, which had been missing since the early days of the Vietnam War.
Already actively involved in the work of the Valley Interfaith Council (VIC), whose primary focus was providing emergency food and shelter to those in need, Marj and Florence discussed the idea of starting a food pantry in the east valley. With their support, and under the umbrella of VIC, they formed a small task force to determine the feasibility of such a project to see if there were any neighboring congregations who were thinking along the same lines. They sent out postcards to various congregations, briefly proposing their idea, and inviting anyone interested in brainstorming to a meeting at Marj’s home church, First Presbyterian Church of North Hollywood.
I’ve often wondered what made me respond to that postcard. The only reason the card fell into my hands in the first place, was that I had organized a small food drive here at First Christian on Thanksgiving, and I guess our church secretary just thought I should have it. I certainly had my hands full with two young children and along with my duties as co-director of the Advent Theatre here at First Christian, the last thing I needed was another “thing” but something made me go.
It was late winter on an evening in 1982 when a few of us gathered for the first time in the Fireside room at the First Presbyterian Church. There were five congregations represented that night: Florence Adler from Temple Beth Hillel, Marj Luke from First Presbyterian Church of NH, Eleanor Hirsch from Temple Adat Ariel, Mary Louise Smith from St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church, and myself from First Christian Church of NH.
As I sat there that evening wondering what in the world I was doing there, I was slowly captivated by these two remarkable women and the vision they shared. Using the “interfaith” aspect as a model, they outlined a plan whereby a food pantry could be established, that would be entirely organized, operated and maintained by what they called “participating congregations”. To become a participating congregation, the governing body of a congregation would have to declare formally they were in favor of this idea, and, they would show their support with volunteers, food, money, prayer, and a representative who would sit on the Pantry Board.
Now, assuming we could get our congregations to participate, there were other challenges in the plan. We would have to find ways to gather the food; we’d need a place to store it and bag it; we’d need a way to transport it; and finally, we’d need a place to distribute it. It was then that I remembered a mostly unused Sunday school room on the corner of our church property, and almost without thinking, I offered up the possibility of using that space as a distribution site.
Honestly, I didn’t think at the time it would be any big deal. The few hungry people I had seen come knocking on our church doors were few and far between, so I never thought it wouldn’t be anything but manageable. I’m afraid to admit I was a bit out of touch with reality at the time, but in retrospect, I thank God I was otherwise, as I probably never would have taken the next step. The meeting eventually ended and we each left with our own assignments.
My first step was to lay it all out with Pastor Bob and if I had expected reluctance and skepticism from him, I was in for a great surprise. He was charged by the idea and pledged his support all the way but cautioned me that the distribution part was not going to be an easy sell. That was an understatement. In the weeks that followed, together Bob and I talked our way through some pretty heavy board meetings. At times exhilarating, at other times contentious, we as a church family struggled to take a real hard look at ourselves; who we were and what our mission was as a people of faith.
Adding to and complicating the talks, were some very loud voices of some of the neighbors who were totally opposed to the idea, fearful that it would bring a “bad element” into the neighborhood.
But in the end, despite all the unknowns and all the what if’s, came the gentle realization that this is exactly what our Lord had commissioned us to do. And so early in 1983, we at FCCNH, took the plunge, voting to become not only a participating congregation of the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry, but its first distribution site as well.
Meanwhile, close by, Rabbi Jim Kaufman was dialoguing with Florence, Marj, and Stella Kornberg about the possibility of using the basement at Temple Beth Hillel as a storage and packing site. Marj remembers Jim standing up and excusing himself from the room. When he came back he said something to the affect that he was certain he could work with his congregation on this, and that if we could get the food, we could have the basement to store it in. Jim, like Bob, was on fire with the idea and was determined to move mountains to make it happen.
So now we had a storage and packing facility, a distribution place, and five participating congregations. We were getting there!
It was here that Stella Kornberg entered the picture, my picture anyway. A member of Temple Beth Hillel. I’ve never known anyone quite like her. “No” or “I can’t” was simply not in her vocabulary, so she set out each day in her old station wagon collecting the food stuffs that each congregation had managed to gather, and – with what little donated money we started with – knocked on every grocery store door in town bargaining for the lowest prices in bulk foods. She’d then load the food in her old station wagon and haul it all down to the basement at Temple Beth Hillel, unpack it, sort it, shelve it, and re-pack it in individual grocery bags.
She had bags packed specifically for families of two or four, with special care and thought about nutritional value, and she even designed later on, bags for the homeless in particular: cans with pop tops and things that didn’t require cooking.
Meanwhile, Eleanor Hirsch from Adat Ariel, began writing and submitting articles to every newspaper in town. A brilliant woman, she was determined to get the word out. And between her efforts and those of Marj and Florence, busy with community networking, the word began to spread. Marj said she did more talking in those first few months than she did in the whole of her life.
Now, Mary Louise Smith from St Michael’s Church, was a delightful woman full of wisecracking humor and who reminded me a lot of Amelia Earhart, helped me tie up the transportation aspect of it. I’m sorry to say she has since passed away. We had a lot of good laughs in those early years hauling those heavy bags together. But the first time we actually did it, our maiden voyage so to speak, was quite an experience. The church had agreed to let us use the church truck and I remember she and I drove over to Temple Beth Hillel, went down the elevator to the basement, loaded up as many groceries as we could fit on a cart, hauled them back up the elevator and unloaded them onto the truck. Of course we had to repeat this process four or five times at least until the truck was full. Then we drove back to the pantry where we unloaded all the bags and stacked them neatly on the newly built shelves, where they would be ready for distribution. In the early days we only had to make that trip every three days or so. Eventually, teams were organized to handle the hundreds of bags that were needed to keep the pantry supplied.
Everything finally seemed to be in place, and in March of 1983, the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry opened its doors for the first time.
…and nobody came, at first.
I remember we even had time to wash the pantry floor every week as we waited for clients. But sadly that didn’t last long, as Marj and Florence’s talking and Eleanor’s writing began to pay off, if you could call it that. For soon they did come; at first little by little and then in droves. Lines formed around the block creating new problems, but even as problems arose, and they did, as Florence remembers it, there was always someone there to help solve the problem or pick up the task.
”It is amazing to me,” she said “what can be created by working together in community. Not only did the Food Pantry impact a community but it impacted greatly those lives who participated in it.”
A sower went to sow some seed, and as he sowed some seed fell on good soil… Since 1983, there have been literally hundreds of volunteers whose hands and hearts have faithfully tended the garden, a garden that began as just a seed. But by God’s almighty hand the seed was scattered and took root in other hearts and minds where it grew and bore fruit.
Now there are ten participating congregations who diligently work together to keep the pantry doors open. We may not think of the pantry as a garden, but to those thousands who have been sustained and nourished by its bounty, it is indeed an oasis in the desert. Florence said to me recently that the goal of the food pantry was, and always has been, to put ourselves out of business. Sadly, that still has not happened and in fact, it could be getting even worse as food prices continue to soar. But we are not deterred nor are we discouraged by the job yet before us because we are a community built upon faith, and where there is faith, there is nothing that can’t be achieved.
